Chaplain, Mansfield College University of Oxford

Mansfield Chapel is seeking a new Chaplain to be at the heart of the College community, playing an integral role in the pastoral and welfare provision for all members of the College. The Chaplain leads a Wednesday service each week during term time and there are other occasional services which the Chaplain is expected to conduct, including weddings and memorial services, and the Chaplain is responsible for overseeing the Chapel diary throughout the year.

 Mansfield College is a liberal, tolerant, progressive community, and the appointee will be expected to sustain these values, developing the work of the current Chaplain to encourage the engagement of all members of the College community with the Chapel, and to foster the friendly relations which currently exist between different groups within the College.

 The Chaplain’s role also has important welfare element, helping to ensure that Mansfield students, both undergraduate and graduate, are well-supported. The welfare team at Mansfield consists of the Tutor for Welfare (a Tutorial Fellow of the College), the Head of Wellbeing and Welfare, six Junior Deans, other members of the decanal team, and members of the wider student community.

 The post calls for the utmost integrity, excellent pastoral skills, and an enthusiasm for working proactively in an informal, close-knit and busy college community. Pastoral awareness, enjoying working as part of a team and approachability are all key qualities.

 The successful candidate will inspire trust that it is safe for students, of all faiths or none, to share a variety of personal concerns with her/him in complete confidence.
