Overview of the job
• Responsible for ensuring effective delivery of chaplaincy
services, including through chaplaincy assurance processes, across a number of designated prisons.
• Responsible for the development, organisation, delivery and evaluation of training to chaplains in both public and privately managed prison sectors, to volunteers and other staff.
• Reports to the Chaplain General and Head of Faith Services, within Rehabilitation Strategy and Interventions and may have line management responsibilities.
• A nationally based position but with responsibility for number of prisons.
• Will be a non-operational role.
Summary: To be part of a collaborative multi‐faith and belief headquarters chaplaincy team , supporting the work of chaplains, PGDs, governors and other stakeholders, also responsible for providing chaplaincy training and for professional standards. The job holder will be responsible for several designated and ensure they follow chaplaincy related policies and practices.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
• responsible for chaplaincy teams in designated prisons, providing appropriate guidance, support as well as ensuring compliance and assurance to other senior managers on the implementation of policy and procedures on the implementation of policy and procedures.
• provide advice and input on training, professional standards and development for Chaplains including provision of a continuing professional development strategy linked to the overall professionalising of the prison service.
• develop training courses as needed, relating to faith and belief, to meet the needs of the service-wide staff groups e.g. faith and belief awareness for prisoner facing staff.
• develop training for locally based delivery, including training tools for volunteers.
• With managing chaplains, oversee training and mentoring of new entrant chaplains
• be a resource to colleagues in the field regarding training and external training opportunities.
• Undertake specific pieces of work as required by the Chaplain General
• develop a learning strategy to deliver chaplaincy training to a high standard and within budget allocation and be responsible
for the development, organisation, delivery and evaluation of training to a diverse group of chaplains in both public and privately managed prison sectors, to volunteers and other staff
• provide advice and input on training, professional standards and development for chaplains including provision of a continuing professional development strategy linked to the overall professionalising of HMPPS
• responsible for chaplaincy teams in designated prisons, providing appropriate support, including organising quarterly meetings for managing chaplains, providing input on chaplaincy developments and good practice, ensure they follow chaplaincy related policies and practices as well as responding to local issues

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week excluding breaks which are unpaid.
