Overview of the job: This is a management job which provides leadership and facilitates/enables religious and pastoral care to prisoners and staff within an establishment.

Summary: This is a non-operational job with line management responsibilities for leading and managing a multi-faith and belief chaplaincy team. Although a managerial role rather than being faith or belief specific, post holders must be endorsed by the respective HMPPS Faith and Belief Adviser.

The job holder will provide for the religious and pastoral care of prisoners and staff in their own faith or belief tradition, and appropriate pastoral care for all irrespective of faith/belief tradition or of none.

The job holder will work with colleagues to ensure the delivery of PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners or its successor policy framework document and also the broader work of chaplaincy in delivering faith and non-faith based courses. The job holder will contribute to the process by which the Governor and Head of Chaplaincy/Profession at headquarters are assured that these policies are being delivered.

Responsible for leading on developing relationships with various support and volunteer groups and, where appropriate, act as Official Prison Visitor Liaison Officer.

Takes responsibility for one’s own spiritual health and development, allowing time

for private prayer/reflection, study and retreat.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This contract is for our (United Kingdom & Europe) immigration business with the UK (United Kingdom) Home Office Immigration Enforcement department to manage the Gatwick Immigration Removal Centres (IRC).

Under the Gatwick IRC (Immigration Removal Centre) contract, we manage and operate both the Brook House and Tinsley House IRC (Immigration Removal Centre), as well as providing Pre-Departure Accommodation services.

Here at Serco, we are looking for a Religious Visitor (Christian) to join our Chaplaincy Team at Gatwick Immigration Removal Centre. The post holder will work across both are sites on a Part time basis. This is essential a weekend cover role. It is essential that they can work independently and in a team.

They must as part of a vibrant Chaplaincy team, contribute, in such a way, as to provide a person-centred care approach, promoting a sense of hope and direction to residents and staff.

Some of the key duties involved in this role are listed below:

To provide pastoral care and seek to ensure spiritual welfare of residents and staff.

To provide faith advice within the establishment and be responsible for supporting the establishment in ensuring faith groups observe their religious holy days and festivals.

To acquire and distribute appropriate religious literature, supplies, and materials.

To facilitate faith specific services.

To attend and provide meaningful input into chaplaincy specific meetings and forums.

To work closely with Security and Safer Custody to ensure issues such as Suicide and Self-Harm and Violence Reduction are delivered in line with the DSO’s.

To contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings including but not limited to Safer Custody, Security and Wing forum.

To ensure that chaplaincy facilities and equipment are maintained to the required standard.

What you need to do the job:

This is an opportunity for a Religious Visitor (Christian) who has the appropriate experience in the delivery of religious services of Christian faith, ideally in a custodial environment.

The successful candidate must be Innovative and forward thinking.

They should also have a proven high-level of professionalism and competence in congregational service delivery to bring to the role.

They will of course need to demonstrate that they have proven experience and skills in pastoral and spiritual leadership.

Similarly, they must have a working knowledge of other faiths represented within the centre to enable them to work in a multi faith environment.

The successful postholder must meet the specified minimum faith eligibility requirement of Christianity.

Faith/Belief Eligibility Requirements (January 2023)

Free Church:

All Free Church chaplains are trained faith practitioners

in their own communities. They are accountable to and accredited by an eligible denomination as listed on the Free Churches Group website. They will either be a minister (lay or ordained) of a Free Church denomination which is:

a member of the Free Churches Group, or

listed by the HMPPS Free Churches Faith and Belief Adviser as an ‘Additional Denomination’.

Denominations listed as an “Additional Denomination” will satisfy all of the following:

have a distinctive Free Church theology;

be national members of either Churches Together in England or Cytun;

have formally requested inclusion on the ‘Additional Denomination’ list;

have agreed to abide by the “Joint Working Protocol for Prison Chaplains” established between the Free Churches Group, Churches together in England and Cytun.

Ordained Chaplains (including ordained deacons) will have completed a formal professional formation process appropriate to their denomination which satisfies that denomination of their ability to effectively practice and fulfil the skills and competencies required of an ordained minister. Where an ordained chaplain is appointed within the first two years of their ordination then the denomination will be required to demonstrate to the Free Churches Faith and Belief Adviser the additional support to be given during this crucial stage of ministry development.

Required qualifications for Prison Chaplains. All Free Churches Chaplains will be expected to hold a formal recognised qualification in theology or religious study, normally to UK University undergraduate Diploma standard.

Requirement for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). In order to maintain endorsement by the Free Churches Faith and Belief Adviser all chaplains will be required to demonstrate regular continuing reflection or training contributing towards their professional development as ministers. This will be recorded and assessed on an annual basis by the HMPPS Free Churches Faith and Belief Adviser.
